What a health and safety awareness course teaches, who needs one and when, how it differs from the construction awareness card and a QQI award, how long it takes online and what the certificate is worth.
A health and safety awareness course is the first course in every working life and the one most often booked without knowing what it contains. Employers search for it to meet the induction duty, new starters because a job offer asked for it, and supervisors because a client wants a certificate for everyone on the contract. This guide explains what the course covers, who needs it and when, how it differs from the one day construction awareness card and from a QQI qualification, how long it takes online, and what the certificate proves to the people who asked for it.

The general induction every employee needs: duties under the 2005 Act, hazards and risk assessment, slips and trips, manual handling, fire, chemicals, display screen equipment, signs, PPE, reporting and the safety statement, with an assessment at the end.
Every new employee at recruitment under Section 10 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, anyone changing role or site, agency and seasonal staff, and contractors working on the premises. Supervisors hold it as the base under the managers' course.
About an hour, on a phone or laptop, with a multiple choice assessment at the end and the certificate issued immediately on passing.
No. Safe Pass is the SOLAS construction safety awareness programme, one day in person, with a statutory card required on construction sites. The general awareness course is the induction for every other workplace and is taken online.
Three years is the interval Irish employers write into their safety statements, with earlier retraining when the role, the site or the equipment changes.
Yes, when it is assessed and verifiable. The HSA regulates the outcome of training, not the delivery method, and a CPD certified certificate with a verification code is accepted evidence of the induction duty.

A clean, comfortable platform designed for smooth learning. Learners in Ireland study from home, from work or on the move, with no classroom visit needed anywhere across every county in Ireland.

Discover why workers and businesses in Ireland, from Dublin, Cork, Galway and beyond, choose Online Safety Courses for health and safety training.
The health & safety induction for employees at Online Safety Courses fits Ireland working life perfectly. From Dublin's construction cranes and Cork's pharma plants to Galway's medtech campuses, Limerick's manufacturing belt and the farms, hotels, warehouses and hospitals in every county between, Irish workplaces run on certified, compliant staff. Instead of losing a day to a classroom, learners in Ireland complete the full accredited training online, in about 1-2 hours, from home or straight from the workplace.
Local employers know exactly what they are looking at when your certificate arrives: CPD Certified, RoSPA approved, HSA aligned training from a provider used by businesses across every county in Ireland. The unique verification code on every certificate makes checks instant, whether you work in Dublin, Cork or Galway.
For businesses, the free Employer Dashboard turns a team rollout into one afternoon of work: bulk registration, live progress and every health and safety certificate in one clean screen, with automatic volume discounts applied at checkout.
This workplace safety course was designed for real staff schedules. Every lesson streams on any device, every pause saves the place, and nothing needs installing. HD video, animation and interactive questions turn hazards, risk assessment and emergency response into knowledge people keep.
The syllabus tracks exactly what the HSA expects from general employee training: legal duties, hazard identification and reporting, risk assessment basics, fire safety, manual handling awareness, ergonomics and welfare. Scenarios span Irish offices, shops, sites and factories.
Whether you are onboarding one new starter or refreshing an entire company, the employee safety training flows without friction from registration to certificate.
Classroom safety inductions for a whole workforce cost serious money: venues, trainers, cover and lost days, repeated for every intake. The online employee safety course removes all of it. Staff certify from their desks or homes, starting the moment you enrol them.
Managers see each completion in real time and can hand auditors a complete company training record in seconds. Stack the automatic volume discounts on top and this becomes the most economical accredited employee safety training available in Ireland.
Pricing is honest: one figure covers the full course, unlimited retakes and the instant health and safety certificate. No add ons, ever.
Nobody learns well against a stopwatch. The self-paced workplace safety course lets each employee move at whatever speed suits, pausing on any device and resuming exactly where they left off. Shift workers, field staff and office teams all finish comfortably.
A clear progress tracker shows how much of the employee safety training remains and how close the certificate is. Some finish in one focused sitting of about 1-2 hours; others take a few short sessions. Both work perfectly.
Assign it company wide and staff will slot it around real work without disruption, one of the main reasons Irish employers return to Online Safety Courses year after year.
There is no waiting around. Each pass generates a digital health and safety certificate on the spot, aligned with Irish legislation and recognised across Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Certificates live permanently in each account for re-download during audits and inspections, and unique verification codes let any inspector confirm them instantly.
For the business, that means a complete, verifiable training record for every single person on the payroll, ready the moment the HSA asks.
Every module comes from licensed, Chartered (CMIOSH) health and safety consultants holding NFQ Level 6 and QQI Level 6 qualifications, people who train real Irish workforces for a living.
That experience shows: staff learn to spot the hazards they walk past daily, understand why risk assessments exist, know their sixty second fire response and protect their backs when lifting. Real Irish scenarios make every lesson stick.
Content is re-reviewed against current legislation and HSA guidance, so the workplace safety course never drifts out of date.
The platform never closes. Night crews certify at 3am, weekend staff on Sunday morning and office teams over lunch, all with exactly the same premium experience.
Progress syncs across every device automatically, so switching from phone to laptop mid module is seamless.
Employees can also revisit modules anytime, so a quick refresher on fire response or hazard reporting is always one tap away, turning the course into a living resource for the whole organisation.
Online Safety Courses has certified more than 749,500 learners across Ireland, the UK and Europe, with a 98% pass rate and a 4.9 star average from verified Google reviews we cannot edit or hide.
From Dublin to Cork, Galway to Limerick and Waterford to Belfast, our employee safety training builds companies where safety is normal rather than an event.
Employers come back because it simply works: clean records, instant certificates and a support team that answers.
Every person on every Irish payroll, because the 2005 Act requires training at induction, on role changes and at regular intervals for all employees. This is the one course that covers the entire organisation.
In practice, businesses run it as the universal baseline: new starters complete it during induction, existing staff refresh on a rolling cycle, and role specific courses like Manual Handling, Working at Heights or HACCP sit on top for those who need them.
That layered structure is exactly what HSA inspectors want to see, and our Employer Dashboard makes it effortless to manage. Our Irish support team can help design the right training matrix for your company.
What a health and safety awareness course teaches, who needs one and when, how it differs from the construction awareness card and a QQI award, how long it takes online and what the certificate is worth.
An awareness course gives every employee the knowledge the law expects them to have before they start: the duties of employer and employee under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, including the employee's own duties under Section 13; what a hazard and a risk are and how a risk assessment turns them into controls; the hazards found in almost every workplace, slips, trips and falls, manual handling, fire, electricity, chemicals, display screen equipment, noise and vehicles; how to read a safety sign and a safety data sheet; what personal protective equipment is for and its limits; what to do when the fire alarm sounds; how to report a hazard, a near miss and an accident; and where the safety statement and the first aid arrangements are. It ends with an assessment, because Section 10 of the Act requires the employee to understand, not to attend.
Employers write a three year refresher into their safety statements, and retrain earlier when the workplace or the work changes.
| Course | What it is | Who needs it | Time and format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health and safety awareness course | The general induction for every workplace, CPD certified | Every employee in every sector | About an hour, online, certificate on passing |
| Safe Pass | SOLAS construction safety awareness programme with a statutory card | Everyone working on a construction site under the Construction Regulations 2013 | One day, in person with an approved tutor, card valid four years |
| QQI Level 5 or 6 in Occupational Health and Safety | A state qualification on the National Framework | Safety coordinators, supervisors taking on a safety duty, people building a safety career | Weeks to a year, part time, assessed assignments |
The awareness course does not replace Safe Pass on a building site and Safe Pass does not replace the awareness course off it; a site worker who moves to a warehouse needs the induction for the warehouse. The QQI award is a different tier altogether, covered in the occupational health and safety courses guide.
The online course takes about an hour, runs on a phone or laptop, pauses and resumes, and ends in a multiple choice assessment with a pass mark. The certificate downloads the moment you pass, states the course, the date and the validity, and carries a verification code the employer checks online. For an employer that is the whole induction record for the knowledge element, created before the new starter leaves the screen; the site specific walk through, where the exits, the extinguishers and the first aid kit are, is added on the floor and noted on the same record.
To a HSA inspector it proves the Section 10 induction happened and was assessed. To a main contractor or a client it proves the person on the contract was briefed on general hazards, which is what their audit asks. To an insurer it is one line in the training record that shows a managed workplace. It is CPD certified and verifiable, which is the recognition this tier carries; it is not a QQI award and does not claim to be, and the courses by industry guide shows which hazard specific courses follow it for each sector.
Duties, hazards, risk assessment, fire, reporting and the safety statement, assessed, for every new employee.
The site card and the state qualification are different tiers; the awareness course is the one everyone holds.
Assessment at the end, certificate with a verification code the moment you pass, three year validity.
