Official Course Overview
The Risk Assessment Course That Holds Up in a Real Inspection
Every workplace accident traces back to a hazard somebody could have assessed: a control missed, a review skipped, a new process nobody looked at. In Ireland the duty to prevent that is written into law, and inspectors expect the person who carries out the risk assessment to be genuinely competent, not just willing. This Risk Assessment Course is written line by line against that law, so the certificate you download at the end stands up in a real inspection instead of just looking good in a folder.
This is the training for the person who owns the risk assessment, written for business owners, managers, supervisors and safety officers. Across five modules you cover what a risk assessment is and why it matters, the legal duties of employers and employees, the five key steps of the risk assessment process, the hierarchy of control from elimination to PPE, and how to review and update assessments so they stay alive. Video, on screen graphics and short interactive checks keep it practical from the first module to the final exam.

Risk Assessment Course in Ireland, Answered Plainly
The questions workers and employers send us every week about the Risk Assessment Course, the certificate and what the HSA expects, answered without the sales talk.
01
What does the Risk Assessment Course actually cover?
Every workplace accident traces back to a hazard somebody could have assessed: a control missed, a review skipped, a new process nobody looked at. In Ireland the duty to prevent that is written into law, and inspectors expect the person who carries out the risk assessment to be genuinely competent, not just willing. The course takes that risk apart step by step, then shows you the controls that remove it.
02
Is Risk Assessment Course a legal requirement in Ireland?
Section 19, 2005 Act is the short answer. Employers must identify the hazards, assess the risks and keep a written risk assessment for every workplace and work activity. The assessment must be reviewed when circumstances change or when there is reason to believe it is no longer valid. Our course is written directly against that wording, which is why it satisfies the duty rather than merely gesturing at it.
03
Who needs to take the Risk Assessment Course?
Anyone with responsibility for carrying out a workplace risk assessment in Ireland: business owners, directors, managers, supervisors, safety officers and any employee named as the competent person for the task. The law calls this person the competent person, someone with sufficient training, skills, experience and knowledge, and this course provides the training part of that definition. It suits every industry and premises type, from construction sites, factories and farms to offices, shops, kitchens, warehouses and healthcare settings, and many businesses certify several people so assessments never wait for one person.
04
How much does the Risk Assessment Course cost?
The Risk Assessment Course is €35.00 per person, and that is the full price. Team bookings get a volume discount applied automatically, and any 5 different courses cost just €100 flat (except our premium HACCP Level 3 and Health and Safety for Managers courses, which keep their own price), with one invoice and one account for all your records.
05
Can I do the Risk Assessment Course online, on my phone?
Yes, the whole course is online and works on any phone, tablet or laptop. There is no classroom day and no fixed start time: register, log in and begin the Risk Assessment Course whenever it suits you, at home or on a break at work. Progress saves automatically as you go.
06
How long does the Risk Assessment Course take to complete?
About 2 hours, and you do not have to do it in one sitting. Progress saves as you go, so you can stop after a lesson and pick it back up on another device. Your certificate is ready to download the moment you pass.
07
What certificate do I get, and when do I receive it?
You download your Risk Assessment Course certificate as a PDF the moment you pass the exam, day or night. It shows your name, the course, the date and a verification link, so an employer or inspector can confirm it in seconds. A copy stays in your account whenever you need to print it again.
08
How long is the certificate valid in Ireland?
Renewal is recommended every three years, or sooner if your processes, equipment or workplace change. We track the date for you and send a reminder before it lapses, so no certificate in your team expires without anyone noticing. The refresher is the same short online course, so staying compliant never costs a working day.
09
What happens if I fail the exam?
Nothing bad. You can retake the exam as many times as you need at no extra cost, and you can revisit any lesson before trying again. Most learners pass first time, because the questions test exactly what the course just taught.
10
Is the practical assessment included?
This course is assessed by examination rather than by a practical, because the competence it builds is judgement rather than technique. You get unlimited attempts at the exam, at no extra cost.
11
Can I book this course for my whole team?
Yes, and the platform is built for it. One company account covers every employee, shows you at a glance who has finished and who has not, stores every certificate in one place and gives you a single invoice for the lot. Group bookings get the volume discount applied automatically in your cart, and any 5 different courses cost just €100 flat (except our premium HACCP Level 3 and Health and Safety for Managers courses, which keep their own price).
12
Will employers and inspectors accept the certificate?
They do. We are an official accredited provider and the certificate carries a verification link an inspector can check in seconds. It is accepted by employers in Ireland, the UK and across the EU, and behind it stand our accreditations: HSA Compliant, QQI Assessed, CPD and RoSPA Accredited.
13
What is the difference between a hazard and a risk?
A hazard is anything that may cause harm: chemicals, working at height, manually handling heavy loads, electricity, a wet floor. A risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody could be harmed by that hazard, combined with how serious the harm could be. The risk assessment course drills this distinction from the first module, because every step that follows depends on it: you identify hazards first, then evaluate the risk each one creates by weighing likelihood against severity, and finally control the risks in order of the hierarchy of control. By the end of the training you can walk through any workplace and separate the two instinctively, which is exactly the skill an inspector expects the competent person to have.
14
Is the risk assessment certificate accepted by HSA inspectors and Irish employers?
Yes. The course is written line by line against the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, in particular Sections 19 and 20, and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, which is exactly the framework the Health and Safety Authority inspects against in Ireland. The certificate carries a unique verification code that an inspector, auditor or insurer can confirm online in seconds, and it slots straight into the training records section of your Safety Statement. Businesses across Ireland use our certificates at inspection every week, from construction firms and manufacturers to offices, retailers, farms and healthcare providers.
15
How many questions are in the exam and what score do I need to pass?
The final exam has 15 multiple choice questions, each with three possible answers, drawn from the five modules of the course. You need at least 12 correct answers out of 15, which is a 75 percent pass mark. There is no time limit, so you can think every question through calmly. If you do not pass first time, you can review any module and retake the exam as many times as you need at no extra cost, and your risk assessment certificate downloads the moment you pass.
16
What are the five steps of the risk assessment process?
Step one: identify the hazards, by walking the workplace, checking equipment and processes and talking to the people who do the work. Step two: decide who might be harmed and how, including employees, contractors, visitors and anyone particularly at risk. Step three: evaluate the risks by weighing likelihood against severity and decide on control measures using the hierarchy of control. Step four: record the significant findings, which in Ireland means writing them into the risk assessment and reflecting them in the Safety Statement. Step five: review and update the assessment regularly, and immediately after an accident, an incident or any significant change. The course dedicates full modules to carrying out the steps and to the review process, so you finish able to complete a suitable and sufficient assessment for your own premises.
17
What is the hierarchy of control and why does it matter?
The hierarchy of control is the order in which control measures must be considered, from the most effective to the least. Elimination removes the hazard completely, like cleaning windows from ground level with an extendable pole instead of a ladder. Substitution swaps a dangerous process or substance for a safer one. Engineering controls, such as machine guards and ventilation, isolate people from the hazard. Administrative controls, such as safe systems of work, training, signage and maintenance schedules, change how people work. Personal protective equipment comes last and only ever as a final layer, never a first answer. Module four of the course, including a dedicated video lesson, teaches you to apply the hierarchy in the right order, which is precisely what inspectors look for in your written assessments.
18
What is a Safety Statement and how does it relate to risk assessments?
The Safety Statement is the written programme, required by Section 20 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, that sets out how safety, health and welfare are managed in your business. Your risk assessments are its foundation: Section 19 requires every employer to identify hazards and assess risks in writing, and those assessments must be reflected in the Safety Statement, kept available to staff and produced for an HSA inspector on request. The course shows you how the two documents work together, how to record significant findings so they are actually usable, and how to bring the Safety Statement to the attention of employees and contractors, which is itself a legal duty.
19
Can I take the risk assessment course in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick or Waterford?
Yes, from anywhere in Ireland. The course is 100 percent online, so learners in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and every other county study the same accredited material and earn the same recognised certificate, with no travel and no classroom days. Start on the office laptop, continue on your phone during a break and finish at home. Progress saves automatically on every device, and the certificate is accepted by employers and inspectors across Ireland, the UK and the EU.
20
Can I train several managers or my whole team at once?
Yes, and the platform is built for it. The free Employer Dashboard lets you register staff in bulk, assign the Risk Assessment course to each person, watch live progress and keep every certificate in one tidy screen, which is exactly what an HSA inspector wants to see at inspection. Discounts apply automatically at checkout: 15 percent off any 3 different courses, 10 percent off 10 or more seats, 20 percent off 50 or more, and any 5 different courses for a flat 100 euro (excludes the premium HACCP Level 3 and Health and Safety for Managers courses). Many businesses pair Risk Assessment for managers and supervisors with Manual Handling or Fire Safety for the wider team.
