The 1 in 4 rule is the classic way to set a leaning ladder at the correct angle: for every four units of height, the base of the ladder sits one unit away from the wall. That produces the 75 degree angle the HSA and every ladder manufacturer recommend. Too steep and the ladder can tip backwards; too shallow and the base can slide out. The course teaches the rule with clear visuals, together with securing methods in the right order: tying both stiles to a fixed point first, then stability devices such as spreader bars, then wedging or footing as the last resort.

The final exam has 15 multiple choice questions, each with three possible answers, drawn from the six modules of the course. You need at least 12 correct answers out of 15, which is a 75 percent pass mark. There is no time limit, so you can think every question through calmly. Irish law allows a ladder only when a risk assessment shows the risk is low and the task is short, as a guide no more than 30 minutes in one position, or when the site itself cannot be changed to take safer equipment. For anything longer or heavier, the course teaches you to choose more suitable equipment such as mobile towers or podium steps. It also covers the questions the assessment must answer: the ground, the weather, overhead power lines (keep at least six metres away), the load and the reach.
