Official Course Overview
Noise Awareness Training Written Line by Line Against Irish Law
Noise damage never announces itself. It builds quietly, shift after shift, in the hum of the production line, the scream of the angle grinder, the thump of plant nobody serviced. Then one day the ringing in the ears refuses to stop, and what sounded like a normal day at work has become tinnitus or noise induced hearing loss, damage no doctor can reverse. This Noise Awareness Training Course is written line by line against that law, so the certificate you download at the end stands up in a real inspection instead of just looking good in a folder.
Four modules walk you through the whole subject from a working person's point of view: what noise actually does to hearing and why controlling it matters, the legal duties under Irish law and the exposure action values of 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A), how to carry out a noise risk assessment step by step, and the control measures that keep noise down, from quieter machinery and job rotation to hearing protection zones, the right hearing protection and health surveillance. Real workplaces and clear photographs keep every lesson practical.
Built on
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
General Application Regulations 2007, Part 5, Chapter 1
Exposure action values, 80 and 85 dB(A)
The three rules that shape your training
01Sections 8 and 19
Employers must assess and control the risk
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires every employer to identify hazards, assess risks and put controls in place, and to provide the information, instruction and training people need to stay safe. Noise that can damage hearing falls squarely under that duty.
02S.I. No. 299 of 2007
Noise has its own regulations
The Control of Noise Regulations in Part 5, Chapter 1 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 set the exposure action values of 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) and the exposure limit value of 87 dB(A), and spell out the duties each level triggers, from information and training to mandatory hearing protection and health surveillance.
03Regulation 131
Reduce noise at the source first
The Regulations require employers to eliminate noise at source or reduce it to the lowest level reasonably practicable, using quieter equipment, better layout and maintenance, and limits on exposure time, before falling back on hearing protection, which is always the last line of defence, never the first.

01
Introduction to Noise Awareness
Foundations
What noise actually is and where it appears in real workplaces, from grinders, saws and compressors to plant, deliveries and amplified sound. You will learn how sound is measured in decibels and what the A-weighted dB(A) figure means, the difference between steady noise and peak impact noise, the statistics on noise induced hearing loss in Ireland, why controlling noise at work matters so much, and how exposure to noise is estimated, and when a competent person needs to measure it formally, for example when noise levels are variable.
02
Control of Noise at Work: Legal Duties
The Law
The Irish legal framework in plain language: the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the duties it places on employers and employees, and the Control of Noise Regulations in Part 5, Chapter 1 of the General Application Regulations 2007. You will learn the lower exposure action value of 80 dB(A), the upper exposure action value of 85 dB(A) and the exposure limit value of 87 dB(A), the duties each level triggers, from information and training to mandatory hearing protection and hearing protection zones, employee responsibilities, and the actions to take if noise is affecting someone's hearing, starting with telling a manager or supervisor.
03
Risk Assessment
Assessment
What a noise risk assessment is, the key definitions, and who should carry it out. Then the five steps in order: identify the noise hazards in your workplace, decide who might be harmed and how, evaluate the risks and the existing control measures against the hierarchy of control, record your findings, and review and update the assessment whenever machinery, processes or the workplace change. You will also learn how noise is measured in practice, the sound measuring equipment a competent person uses, and how measurement results feed straight into the controls you choose.
04
Reducing and Controlling Risks
Action
The control measures that keep noise down day after day, and why controlling noise at the source always beats relying on hearing protection: buying and hiring machinery that emits the lowest noise levels, the standards new machinery must meet, maintenance and correct use of machinery and equipment, job rotation to cut exposure times, information, instruction and training, hearing protection zones and when they must be marked, when to use hearing protection and which type suits each person, from earmuffs to earplugs for glasses wearers, the general requirements for PPE, and the health surveillance and hearing checks the law expects, at least every 3 years for exposed workers. Finish this module and the final exam unlocks: pass it and your certificate downloads straight away.

Noise Awareness Training Course in Ireland, Answered Plainly
The questions workers and employers send us every week about the Noise Awareness Training Course, the certificate and what the HSA expects, answered without the sales talk.
01
What does the Noise Awareness Training Course actually cover?
Noise damage never announces itself. It builds quietly, shift after shift, in the hum of the production line, the scream of the angle grinder, the thump of plant nobody serviced. Then one day the ringing in the ears refuses to stop, and what sounded like a normal day at work has become tinnitus or noise induced hearing loss, damage no doctor can reverse. The course takes that risk apart step by step, then shows you the controls that remove it.
02
Is Noise Awareness Training a legal requirement in Ireland?
Sections 8 and 19 is the short answer. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires every employer to identify hazards, assess risks and put controls in place, and to provide the information, instruction and training people need to stay safe. Noise that can damage hearing falls squarely under that duty. Our course is written directly against that wording, which is why it satisfies the duty rather than merely gesturing at it.
03
Who needs to take the Noise Awareness Training Course?
Anyone who works in, or is responsible for, a workplace where people are exposed to high levels of noise: employers, supervisors, safety officers and employees in settings like construction sites, factories, warehouses, workshops, farms and venues. It is written at an introductory level, so no previous knowledge is required.
04
How much does the Noise Awareness Training Course cost?
The Noise Awareness Training Course is €35.00 per person, and that is the full price. Team bookings get a volume discount applied automatically, and any 5 different courses cost just €100 flat (except our premium HACCP Level 3 and Health and Safety for Managers courses, which keep their own price), with one invoice and one account for all your records.
05
Can I do the Noise Awareness Training Course online, on my phone?
Yes, the whole course is online and works on any phone, tablet or laptop. There is no classroom day and no fixed start time: register, log in and begin the Noise Awareness Training Course whenever it suits you, at home or on a break at work. Progress saves automatically as you go.
06
How long does the Noise Awareness Training Course take to complete?
About 1-2 hours, and you do not have to do it in one sitting. Progress saves as you go, so you can stop after a lesson and pick it back up on another device. Your certificate is ready to download the moment you pass.
07
What certificate do I get, and when do I receive it?
You download your Noise Awareness Training Course certificate as a PDF the moment you pass the exam, day or night. It shows your name, the course, the date and a verification link, so an employer or inspector can confirm it in seconds. A copy stays in your account whenever you need to print it again.
08
How long is the certificate valid in Ireland?
Renewal is recommended every three years, or sooner if your machinery, processes or the law changes. We track the date for you and send a reminder before it lapses, so no certificate in your team expires without anyone noticing. The refresher is the same short online course, so staying compliant never costs a working day.
09
What happens if I fail the exam?
Nothing bad. You can retake the exam as many times as you need at no extra cost, and you can revisit any lesson before trying again. Most learners pass first time, because the questions test exactly what the course just taught.
10
Is the practical assessment included?
This course is assessed by examination rather than by a practical, because the competence it builds is judgement rather than technique. You get unlimited attempts at the exam, at no extra cost.
11
Can I book this course for my whole team?
Yes, and the platform is built for it. One company account covers every employee, shows you at a glance who has finished and who has not, stores every certificate in one place and gives you a single invoice for the lot. Group bookings get the volume discount applied automatically in your cart, and any 5 different courses cost just €100 flat (except our premium HACCP Level 3 and Health and Safety for Managers courses, which keep their own price).
12
Will employers and inspectors accept the certificate?
They do. We are an official accredited provider and the certificate carries a verification link an inspector can check in seconds. It is accepted by employers in Ireland, the UK and across the EU, and behind it stand our accreditations: Irish Legislation Aligned, QQI Assessed, CPD and RoSPA Accredited.
13
What does the noise awareness training course cover?
Everything a worker or employer needs to understand, assess and control noise risks, across four modules: what noise is, how it is measured in dB(A) and how excessive exposure causes tinnitus and noise induced hearing loss; the legal duties under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Control of Noise Regulations in the General Application Regulations 2007, including the 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) exposure action values; the five step noise risk assessment and when formal measurements are needed; and the control measures that keep noise down, from quieter machinery, maintenance and job rotation to hearing protection zones, hearing protection and health surveillance.
14
Is noise awareness training required by law in Ireland?
Employers in Ireland must assess and control the risks from noise under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Control of Noise Regulations in Part 5, Chapter 1 of the General Application Regulations 2007. Once noise reaches the lower exposure action value of 80 dB(A), the law requires employers to give workers information and training on noise risks, hearing protection and health surveillance. This course delivers and proves exactly that training.
15
What are the noise exposure action values I need to know?
Three numbers run through the whole subject. The lower exposure action value is 80 dB(A): from here, employers must provide hearing protection on request, plus information and training. The upper exposure action value is 85 dB(A): from here, hearing protection must be provided and worn, hearing protection zones must be marked, and a programme of control measures is required. The exposure limit value of 87 dB(A), taking hearing protection into account, must never be exceeded. The course explains what each level means in practice for your workplace.
16
How many questions does the exam have and what do I need to pass?
The final test has 15 multiple choice questions drawn from all four modules, each with three answers to choose from. The pass mark is 75 percent, which means 12 correct answers out of 15. There is no clock running, and if the first attempt falls short you can revisit any module and retake the exam free of charge as many times as you need. The certificate is issued the moment you pass.
17
How fast do I get the noise awareness training certificate?
Instantly. The moment you pass the final test, the certificate is generated automatically, emailed to your inbox and saved on the Certificates page of your account. Most learners go from enrolment to a verifiable certificate in a single sitting of about 2 hours, and the certificate stays valid for 3 years.
18
Who should take the noise awareness course?
Anyone exposed to loud noise at work and anyone responsible for people who are: construction crews, factory and production line workers, warehouse and logistics teams, mechanics and workshop staff, farmers and forestry workers, venue and events staff, plus the supervisors, safety officers and employers who manage them. If people near you have to raise their voice to be heard two metres away, noise levels are probably high enough to make this training worthwhile.
19
Can I do the course from Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick or anywhere else in Ireland?
Yes. The training is delivered 100 percent online, so a site worker in Tralee gets exactly the same accredited course and the same recognised certificate as a safety officer in Dublin. Start it on a laptop at work, continue on your phone on the commute and finish at home; progress follows you automatically between devices, and the certificate is accepted by employers across Ireland, the UK and the EU.
20
How do I train a full team and what discounts apply?
The free Employer Dashboard is made for exactly that: enrol staff in bulk, assign the Noise Awareness Training Course to each person, follow live progress and keep every certificate in one screen, ready for any audit. Checkout applies the discounts automatically, no codes needed: 15 percent off any 3 different courses, 10 percent off 10 or more courses, 20 percent off 50 or more, and any 5 different courses for a flat 100 euro (excludes the premium HACCP Level 3 and Health and Safety for Managers courses).
