The 2016 Reporting Regulations: the three day rule, dangerous occurrences, fatalities, how to report online, deadlines, records and who reports for the self employed and the public.
Employers in Ireland must report certain workplace accidents and dangerous occurrences to the Health and Safety Authority under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Reporting of Accidents and Dangerous Occurrences) Regulations 2016. The rules are simple once you know the thresholds, and the report is made online. Failing to report is an offence and leaves a gap in the records that matters if a claim follows.

Local employers know exactly what they are looking at when your certificate arrives: CPD Certified, RoSPA approved, HSA aligned training from a provider used by businesses across every county in Ireland. For businesses, the free Employer Dashboard turns a team rollout into one afternoon of work: bulk registration, live progress and every health and safety certificate in one clean screen, with automatic volume discounts applied at checkout.
This workplace safety course was designed for real staff schedules. Every lesson streams on any device, every pause saves the place, and nothing needs installing. HD video, animation and interactive questions turn hazards, risk assessment and emergency response into knowledge people keep.
The syllabus tracks exactly what the HSA expects from general employee training: legal duties, hazard identification and reporting, risk assessment basics, fire safety, manual handling awareness, ergonomics and welfare. Scenarios span Irish offices, shops, sites and factories.
Whether you are onboarding one new starter or refreshing an entire company, the employee safety training flows without friction from registration to certificate.
Classroom safety inductions for a whole workforce cost serious money: venues, trainers, cover and lost days, repeated for every intake. The online employee safety course removes all of it. Staff certify from their desks or homes, starting the moment you enrol them.
Managers see each completion in real time and can hand auditors a complete company training record in seconds. Stack the automatic volume discounts on top and this becomes the most economical accredited employee safety training available in Ireland.
Pricing is honest: one figure covers the full course, unlimited retakes and the instant health and safety certificate. No add ons, ever.
Nobody learns well against a stopwatch. The self-paced workplace safety course lets each employee move at whatever speed suits, pausing on any device and resuming exactly where they left off. Shift workers, field staff and office teams all finish comfortably.
A clear progress tracker shows how much of the employee safety training remains and how close the certificate is. Some finish in one focused sitting of about 1-2 hours; others take a few short sessions. Both work perfectly.
Assign it company wide and staff will slot it around real work without disruption, one of the main reasons Irish employers return to Online Safety Courses year after year.
There is no waiting around. Each pass generates a digital health and safety certificate on the spot, aligned with Irish legislation and recognised across Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Certificates live permanently in each account for re-download during audits and inspections, and unique verification codes let any inspector confirm them instantly.
For the business, that means a complete, verifiable training record for every single person on the payroll, ready the moment the HSA asks.
Every module comes from licensed, Chartered (CMIOSH) health and safety consultants holding NFQ Level 6 and QQI Level 6 qualifications, people who train real Irish workforces for a living.
That experience shows: staff learn to spot the hazards they walk past daily, understand why risk assessments exist, know their sixty second fire response and protect their backs when lifting. Real Irish scenarios make every lesson stick.
Content is re-reviewed against current legislation and HSA guidance, so the workplace safety course never drifts out of date.
The platform never closes. Night crews certify at 3am, weekend staff on Sunday morning and office teams over lunch, all with exactly the same premium experience.
Progress syncs across every device automatically, so switching from phone to laptop mid module is seamless.
Employees can also revisit modules anytime, so a quick refresher on fire response or hazard reporting is always one tap away, turning the course into a living resource for the whole organisation.
Online Safety Courses has certified more than 749,500 learners across Ireland, the UK and Europe, with a 98% pass rate and a 4.9 star average from verified Google reviews we cannot edit or hide.
From Dublin to Cork, Galway to Limerick and Waterford to Belfast, our employee safety training builds companies where safety is normal rather than an event.
Employers come back because it simply works: clean records, instant certificates and a support team that answers.
Every person on every Irish payroll, because the 2005 Act requires training at induction, on role changes and at regular intervals for all employees. This is the one course that covers the entire organisation.
In practice, businesses run it as the universal baseline: new starters complete it during induction, existing staff refresh on a rolling cycle, and role specific courses like Manual Handling, Working at Heights or HACCP sit on top for those who need them.
That layered structure is exactly what HSA inspectors want to see, and our Employer Dashboard makes it effortless to manage. Our Irish support team can help design the right training matrix for your company.
The 2016 Reporting Regulations: the three day rule, dangerous occurrences, fatalities, how to report online, deadlines, records and who reports for the self employed and the public.
An accident at work causing the death of an employee. An accident at work causing an employee to be unable to carry out their normal work for more than three consecutive days, not counting the day of the accident but including weekends and rest days. An accident to a person who is not an employee, caused by the work activity, that requires treatment by a registered medical practitioner or admission to hospital. The dangerous occurrences listed in Schedule 1 of the Regulations, such as scaffold collapse, the failure of lifting equipment, an unintended explosion or fire, or a release of a substance that could cause serious injury, whether or not anyone was hurt.
Fatalities are reported to the HSA immediately by telephone and followed by a written report; the scene is left undisturbed until the HSA and the Garda allow otherwise. Other reportable accidents and dangerous occurrences are reported within ten working days of the event, using the HSA online reporting system. Where the absence only becomes more than three days after the fact, the ten days run from when the employer learns the threshold has been passed.
The employer, for employees. The self employed person, for themselves, or a family member or another person where they cannot. The person in control of the workplace, for members of the public and for people who are not their employees. Where an employee is placed by an agency, the employer who directs the work reports.
Keep a record of every reported accident and dangerous occurrence for ten years, along with the internal accident report and the investigation findings. Investigate every accident, and near misses, to find the causes and update the risk assessment and safety statement. Accident records are also what insurers, solicitors and the Personal Injuries Assessment Board will ask for.
Absence of more than three consecutive days, weekends included, day of accident excluded.
The deadline for the online report; fatalities immediately by phone.
Schedule 1 events reported even when nobody is injured.
Accident causes, reporting and near miss culture are part of the accredited Health and Safety Course for every employee. Train online and certify today.
