The definition in the Irish 2001 Regulations, why a space does not have to be small to be confined, the specified risks and the everyday places that qualify.
A confined space is not simply a small space. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Confined Spaces) Regulations 2001 it is any place, including a vessel, tank, container, pit, bund, chamber, cellar or similar space, which by virtue of its enclosed nature creates conditions that give rise to a likelihood of an accident, harm or injury requiring emergency action. The enclosure and the specified risk together make it confined. An open topped tank, a trench and a large plant room can all qualify.

This confined spaces course was designed from day one for busy working people. Every lesson streams on any device, every pause saves your place, and nothing needs installing. HD video, animation and interactive questions turn atmospheric hazards, permit systems and emergency procedure into knowledge that sticks.
The syllabus tracks exactly what the Confined Spaces Regulations 2001 and the HSA expect: identification, oxygen deficiency and enrichment, toxic and flammable atmospheres, gas testing awareness, ventilation, permits to work, safe entry and rescue arrangements. Examples come from Irish utilities, farms and industry.
Whether you are one contractor meeting a tender requirement or a manager certifying a full crew, the confined space training flows without friction from registration to certificate.
A classroom confined spaces day costs far more than the ticket price: travel, lost hours and scheduling around shift patterns. The online confined spaces course removes every one of those costs. Staff certify from home, the depot or the site cabin, starting the moment you enrol them.
Managers see each completion in real time and can hand auditors a full training record in seconds. Stack the automatic volume discounts on top and this becomes the most economical accredited confined space awareness training available in Ireland.

Nobody learns well against a stopwatch. The self-paced confined spaces course lets you move at whatever speed suits, pausing on any device and resuming exactly where you left off. Utility crews, shift workers and contractors all finish comfortably.
A clear progress tracker shows how much of the confined space training remains and how close the certificate is. Some learners complete it in one focused sitting of about 2 hours; others take a few short sessions across the week. Both work perfectly.
Assign it to employees and they will slot it around real work without disruption, one of the main reasons Irish employers return to Online Safety Courses year after year.
There is no waiting around. Pass the assessment and the digital confined spaces certificate is generated on the spot, aligned with Irish legislation and recognised across Ireland, the UK and Europe.
It lives permanently in your account for re-download during audits, inductions, tenders and insurance renewals, and its unique verification code lets any employer or inspector confirm it instantly.
On a CV, the certificate signals awareness of Ireland's most unforgiving workplace hazard, a strong differentiator for utilities and civils work.
Every module comes from licensed, Chartered (CMIOSH) health and safety consultants holding NFQ Level 6 and QQI Level 6 qualifications, people who have written real permits and investigated real confined space incidents.
That experience shows: you learn why an apparently empty tank can kill in seconds, what a permit to work actually controls, what the gas meter is telling you and why the rescuer so often becomes the second victim. Irish case studies drive every lesson home.
Content is re-reviewed against current legislation and HSA guidance, so the confined spaces course never drifts out of date.
The platform never closes. Start the confined space training on a quiet night shift, continue on Saturday morning and finish over lunch on Monday, whatever rhythm suits your life.
Progress syncs across every device automatically, so switching from phone to laptop mid module is seamless. Night crews and remote sites get exactly the same premium experience.
Crews can also reopen the atmosphere or permit modules right before a scheduled entry, turning the course into a living safety reference rather than a one time event.
Online Safety Courses has certified more than 749,500 learners across Ireland, the UK and Europe, with a 98% pass rate and a 4.9 star average from verified Google reviews we cannot edit or hide.
From Dublin to Cork, Galway to Limerick and Waterford to Belfast, our confined space training keeps Irish workers out of spaces that do not forgive mistakes.
Employers come back because it simply works: clean records, instant certificates and a support team that answers.
Legally, anyone whose work brings them into or near tanks, sewers, silos, shafts, pits or any enclosed space. The Confined Spaces Regulations 2001 demand training, competence and safe systems before any entry, and the HSA enforces hard.
Practically, that means water services and utility crews, construction and civil engineering workers, tank cleaners, maintenance fitters, farmers with slurry pits and grain silos, brewery and food processing staff, telecoms workers and self employed contractors chasing tender requirements.
Irish farm slurry pits alone take lives almost every year, often two at once when a rescuer follows. If enclosed spaces feature anywhere in your work, this course applies to you.
The definition in the Irish 2001 Regulations, why a space does not have to be small to be confined, the specified risks and the everyday places that qualify.
The regulations define the conditions that make an enclosed place a confined space: the presence or reasonably foreseeable presence of a flammable or explosive atmosphere; harmful gas, fume or vapour; free flowing solid such as grain or sand; an increasing level of liquid; an excess of oxygen; an excessively high temperature; or the lack or reasonably foreseeable lack of oxygen. If the enclosure could produce any of these, it is a confined space.
Storage tanks, reaction vessels and silos. Sewers, manholes, drains, culverts and pumping stations. Slurry pits and tanks on farms, one of the deadliest confined spaces in Ireland. Ducts, flues, chimneys and boilers. Trenches and excavations that can accumulate gas. Ship holds, road tankers and rail wagons. Cellars, basements, undercrofts and unventilated plant rooms. Cold rooms and freezers where the door can close.
Around half of the people who die in confined spaces are would be rescuers who enter without equipment to help a colleague. Most deaths involve an atmosphere that could not be seen or smelled: hydrogen sulphide in a slurry tank, carbon monoxide from an engine, oxygen displaced by nitrogen or consumed by rusting steel. Recognising the space as confined is what triggers the testing, the permit and the rescue plan that prevent those deaths.
Any enclosed place where a specified risk is present or foreseeable.
Tanks, sewers, slurry pits, cellars, trenches and plant rooms all qualify.
About half of confined space fatalities are untrained rescuers.
