The 2007 General Application Regulations, Schedule 3 risk factors, employer duties, employee duties and what HSA inspectors check.
Ireland has no standalone manual handling act. The rules sit in Part 2, Chapter 4 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, made under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, and they implement the EU Manual Handling Directive 90/269/EEC. Two regulations carry the weight: Regulation 68 on avoiding and reducing risk and Regulation 69 on training.

Yes. Regulation 69 of the General Application Regulations 2007 requires employers to provide manual handling training and information to employees whose work involves manual handling of loads with a risk of injury.
The regulations do not set a fixed interval. HSA guidance and industry practice treat three years as the standard refresher period, with earlier retraining when tasks, equipment or an employee's duties change.
The list of risk factors a manual handling risk assessment must consider: the load, the physical effort, the working environment, the activity requirements and individual factors.

This manual handling course was designed from day one for busy working people. Every lesson streams on any device, every pause saves your place, and nothing needs installing. HD video, animation and interactive questions turn spine anatomy, TILE assessment and lifting technique into knowledge that actually sticks.
The syllabus tracks exactly what the HSA expects: how handling injuries happen, load assessment before every lift, the eight principles of safe manual handling, pushing and pulling, team lifts and mechanical aids. Scenes come from real Irish warehouses, wards, shops and sites.
Whether you are one worker getting job ready or a manager certifying a whole workforce, the manual handling training flows without friction from registration to certificate.
A classroom manual handling day costs far more than the ticket price: travel, cover staff, lost hours and scheduling headaches. The online manual handling course removes every one of those costs. Staff certify from home, the office or the warehouse floor, starting the moment you enrol them.
Managers see each completion in real time and can hand auditors a full training record in seconds. Stack the automatic volume discounts on top and this becomes the most economical accredited manual handling training available in Ireland.
Pricing is honest: one figure covers the full course, unlimited retakes and the instant manual handling certificate. No add ons, ever.
Nobody learns well against a stopwatch. The self-paced manual handling course lets you move at whatever speed suits, pausing on any device and resuming exactly where you left off. Shift workers, parents and busy teams all finish comfortably.
A clear progress tracker shows how much of the manual handling training remains and how close the certificate is. Some learners complete it in one focused sitting of about 45 minutes; others take a few short sessions across the week. Both work perfectly.
Assign it to employees and they will slot it around real work without disruption, one of the main reasons Irish employers return to Online Safety Courses year after year.
There is no waiting around. Pass the assessment and the digital manual handling certificate is generated on the spot, aligned with Irish legislation and recognised across Ireland, the UK and Europe.
It lives permanently in your account for re-download during audits, job applications and insurance renewals, and its unique verification code lets any employer or inspector confirm it instantly.
On a CV, the certificate is one of the most requested credentials in Irish hiring, often the difference between two otherwise identical candidates.
Every module comes from licensed, Chartered (CMIOSH) health and safety consultants holding NFQ Level 6 and QQI Level 6 qualifications, people who have assessed real handling tasks in real Irish workplaces.
That experience shows: you learn to judge a load honestly, set your feet and back correctly, use team lifts properly and reach for mechanical aids at the right moments. Case studies from Irish warehouses, care settings and sites make each lesson concrete.
Content is re-reviewed against current legislation and HSA guidance, so the manual handling course never drifts out of date.
The platform never closes. Start the manual handling training on a quiet night shift, continue on Saturday morning and finish over lunch on Monday, whatever rhythm suits your life.
Progress syncs across every device automatically, so switching from phone to laptop mid module is seamless. Night crews and remote workers get exactly the same premium experience.
Teams can also reopen the safe lifting modules as a refresher before a heavy delivery day, turning the course into a living safety reference rather than a one time event.
Online Safety Courses has certified more than 749,500 learners across Ireland, the UK and Europe, with a 98% pass rate and a 4.9 star average from verified Google reviews we cannot edit or hide.
From Dublin to Cork, Galway to Limerick and Waterford to Belfast, our manual handling training protects backs and keeps businesses compliant every working day.
Employers come back because it simply works: clean records, instant certificates and a support team that answers.
Legally, anyone whose work involves lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads. The 2005 Act and the 2007 Regulations put the duty on every employer, and HSA inspectors ask for the training records.
Practically, that means warehouse operatives and delivery drivers, healthcare workers and carers, retail and hospitality staff, construction workers, cleaners and the office employee who shifts archive boxes twice a week. New starters need it at induction; everyone else needs a refresher every 3 years.
If your hands move loads at work, this course applies to you, and our Irish support team will happily confirm which other courses your role needs.
The 2007 General Application Regulations, Schedule 3 risk factors, employer duties, employee duties and what HSA inspectors check.
The employer must take appropriate organisational measures, or use the appropriate means, in particular mechanical equipment, to avoid the need for manual handling. Where it cannot be avoided, the employer must assess the task using the risk factors in Schedule 3 and take measures to reduce the risk, particularly of back injury. Workers must be given general indications and, where possible, precise information on the weight of each load and the heaviest side of an off centre load.
Schedule 3 lists the factors an assessment must consider: the characteristics of the load (too heavy, too large, unwieldy, unstable, positioned so it must be held away from the trunk), the physical effort required (too strenuous, twisting, sudden movement, unstable posture), the characteristics of the working environment (space, floors, temperature, lighting, levels), the requirements of the activity (frequency, distance, rest periods, imposed pace) and individual risk factors (physical suitability, clothing, knowledge and training).
Employers must ensure that employees involved in manual handling receive general indications and, where possible, precise information on how to handle loads correctly and the risks they might face if the loads are handled incorrectly. The HSA expects this to be delivered by a competent instructor, to include the principles of safe handling, and to be refreshed periodically; a three year cycle is the widely accepted standard.
HSA inspectors ask for the manual handling risk assessments, the safety statement and the training records. Failures can lead to improvement notices, prohibition notices and prosecution under the 2005 Act. After an injury claim, the same records decide whether the employer met the legal standard.
Avoid manual handling where possible; where not, assess with Schedule 3 and reduce the risk.
Give every employee involved in manual handling proper training and load information.
